Water Deregulation

Following government deregulation in April 2017, companies in England can now select their own water supplier. In the same way that they can choose their energy supplier.  Water has been deregulated in Scotland since 2008, but it remains regulated in both Wales and Northern Ireland. Previously the water supplier was determined by location, but with deregulation around 1.2 million businesses, charities and public sector organisations now have a choice of suppliers.

What does this mean for companies?

It means that companies based in England now have access to the largest competitive water market in the world, with 20 water retailers offering their services. And a competitive market means lower prices for customers.

A survey conducted in October 2016 on over 450 business decision-makers showed that 38% said they were paying too much, with 74% saying they were likely to switch supplier. It also highlighted that customers were unhappy about customer service and that they wanted a supplier they could trust. With an open market customers can pick a supplier that suits their needs.
